Mark Fox taught me a game called Random Entry about a quarter of a century ago.
The game begins when each player creates an artistic response to a stimuli that was thrust upon them by someone else. Each player is given a different stimuli.
The players are then given a tightly constrained amount of time – usually about 15 minutes – to complete their creative responses. The group then experiences and reacts to each other’s creative response.
Creative efforts are evaluated by three criteria:
-
Is the original stimuli clearly present in the creative response?
-
Did the player transform the original stimuli into a new work of art that carries a significantly different message?
-
Does the message of that new work of art ring true, and does it make sense?
