The Monday Morning Memo

The Eye of the Storm lecture hall in the tower at Wizard Academy
– that room you saw on the previous page – has received its fabulous new chairs! Sit in one of these and you’ll never want to stand up again.
Absolutely the finest desk chairs manufactured in the world today.
Each of these 33 VERY EXPENSIVE chairs was purchased for us by an alumnus of the academy whose name is embroidered on the back of a chair. Prior to putting those names on our chairs, the last time the factory used their embroidery machine was when they embroidered the official seal of the President of the United States on the backs of two of these same chairs. That’s right. These are the chairs chosen by the government for their durability, safety (they’ll hold the weight of a car) and comfort. We were given the lowest price that could be offered – the same price paid by the government – because the company is owned by Acadgrad Ernie Nycz. As a supplier to a number of government agencies, he was contractually bound not to sell below that price. We got a very good deal. It is good to have friends. Sitting in one of these chairs could change your life. Come. Give it a try. – Indy

Random Quote:

“The way we talk about data quality is misleading. We speak of ‘clean’ data as if there is one state where data is both accurate (and bias-free) and reusable. Clean is not the same thing as accurate, and accurate is not the same thing as actionable. Problems on any one of these vectors could impede an A.I. model’s development or interfere with the quality of its results. There are lots of reasons data coming into a model may be problematic. Some are obvious: The data is factually incorrect, corrupted, or in an unexpected format. Other problems are more nuanced: The data was captured in a particular context and is being reused inappropriately; the data is at the wrong level of granularity for the model’s purpose; or the data isn’t standardized, and the same facts are represented or described in different ways.”
