The Monday Morning Memo

#2 Melvin the Doobie Lion

Wizzo was supposed to be the guest of honor at a special meeting of the Lions Club on the night this ancient, 600-pound, white-marble lion from a palace in India was to be sold at auction to the highest bidder. The Lions were awarding him the prestigious Melvin Jones Award, the highest honor the Lions Club can bestow. (This was a particularly big deal since Wizzo has never been a member of the club.) Wizzo is profoundly awkward in social settings so he and the Princess went to the auction but his right-hand-man, Sean Taylor, accepted the award in his place. It is reported he wore a tux and gave the crowd a marvelous James Bond imitation.

You will agree, I’m sure, that the white marble lion looks as though he’s been smokin’ a doobie so we were compelled – by circumstances, you understand – to name our new friend, Melvin the Doobie Lion.

Melvin watches over the children in the playground in front of the Enchanted Emporium, the new bookshop in the Welcome Center at the entrance to Wizard Academy.

It’s ridiculous when someone tells me, ‘Aren’t there more important things to be mad about?’ You novice, you fucking rube. You shit idiot. I can be mad about 20,000 things at once. I am a walking chimera of various furies and petty qualms.
