The Monday Morning Memo

ROUND TWO

In February, 1964, an outraged parent wrote
to the US Attorney General alleging that the song
“Louie, Louie” by the Kingsmen was obscene,
claiming the lyrics said,

A fine little bitch, she waits for me;
She gets her kicks on top of me.
Each night I take her out all alone;
She ain’t the kind I lay at home.

In response, J. Edgar Hoover instructed the FBI
to obtain a copy of the recording. He then conducted
a thirty-one-month investigation into the song and the band.

Am I Making This Up?

YES, you made it up, Indy.    NO, it’s true. Hoover was like that.

Random Quote:

“…you have always leaped into the fray to defend the weak and the oppressed; you have had faith in people and causes and in truths. You have sometimes made mistakes—all of us do—but, unlike the rest of us, you have always admitted your mistakes. You have consistently rejected any idea of distinction or material benefits for your achievement. You refused the supposed honor of the Nobel Prize when you had nothing. You were knocked down three times by terrorist bombs…. You have not clamored for justice because you do not wish to make judgments…. You have often preferred to be used and duped rather than to remain indifferent, and often to be disappointed rather than to deny hope. What an exemplary life for a man who never sought to set an example!”

- Francoise Sagan, Love Letter to Jean-Paul Sartre
