The Monday Morning Memo

Noah_AfformationsAs you know, I occasionally give the wizard a page in the rabbit hole to say things he would hesitate to say in the Monday Morning Memo. This is one of those occasions…

I keep motivational speakers, as a rule, in the same mental category as multilevel marketing, country music and NASCAR. There is something about all four of these that strikes me as painfully predictable.

Perhaps it’s because I was raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
“Attention K-Mart shoppers, we have a flashing blue light special…”

Yes, that must be it.

Zig Ziglar, Kyle Cease and Noah St. John are notable exceptions to my negative impressions of the self-help category. Each of them seems consumed with a sense of wonder about what they have found. They are not masters of a craft, but enthusiastic explorers of a new world. Zig was a colorful country boy. I can relate to that. Kyle is a comedian that stumbled into something that changed his life. I can relate to that. Noah St. John – like Kyle Cease – is a cognoscenti of Wizard Academy who had an epiphany that altered his world. World-altering is what we do. (Or perhaps it’s only what we think we do. Don Quixote is with us always.) Noah was surprised when I mentioned that his discovery has been with us since the time of Abraham.

Noah’s discovery of the miracle of positive self-talk.

Random Quote:

“Three thousand years ago, King David, the father of Solomon, wrote the now-famous 23rd Psalm during a time in his life when he stood in that great polarity. He begins the Psalm by telling us, ‘The Lord is my shepherd,’ and then he says to God, ‘Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.’

The rod is a weapon with which the shepherd defends his sheep from predators. The staff, with its ‘shepherd’s crook’ on the end, is used to catch a sheep by its neck so that he might pull it close to him.

May the great Shepherd reach out to you now and draw you close.”
