Pearl, My Dog

Sundown in Muskogee is a semi-fictionalized short story I wrote about growing up. I say “semi-fictionalized” only because the story is written from the perspective of an adolescent me, not the me I am today.
The story revolves around my dog, Pearl, who loved me in that unconditional way that earned her race the title of Man's Best Friend.
This is Pearl with one of her many litters of puppies, about 1971.
When it came time to give the puppies away, we ran an ad in the classifieds that said, “Authentic Precious Pearl puppies, free to good homes.” Of course we got a lot of calls from people who wanted to know, “What is a Precious Pearl puppy?” We told them of course about Pearl, our incredibly intelligent mixed-breed mutt, and all her wonderful attributes. Every caller took a puppy. We never had any trouble giving them away.
I was about 13 at the time. Does it surprise you that I found my way into advertising? 🙂
I've asked God to let Pearl chase butterflies in heaven until I get there.
