The Monday Morning Memo

Disney’s Walt Peregoy drew Don Quixote riding Rocinante across the surface of the deep…

The purpose of any building or the meaning of any bronze statue on the Wizard Academy campus can be determined by its elevation. We travel upward to study and celebrate. We travel downward to find meaning and rest.

Look for the waterlines.

Life is a journey on water. Above the waterline is the world of the conscious mind. Below the waterline is the unconscious. Our relationship to the unconscious is like our relationship to water. We need it by the cupful to survive, but if we stay under too long, we’ll drown; a psychotic break. And there are monsters in the deep.”
– Dr. Richard D. Grant,
explaining Carl Jung’s theory of Depth Psychology

A brief plunge into the water is refreshing. Those distractions we call “the arts” communicate to the unconscious mind in the languages of shape and color, simile and metaphor, pitch, key, tempo, contour, interval and rhythm.

Random Quote:

“It is difficult at times to repress the thought that history is about as instructive as an abattoir (slaughterhouse;) that Tacitus was right and that peace is merely the desolation left behind after the decisive operations of merciless power.”

- Irish poet Seamus Heaney, from his Nobel Prize lecture
