The Monday Morning Memo

Look at the left edge of the photo and you’ll see the gate into
the Zubiate Courtyard, the grand entrance to Spence Manor.

After we dig out all the dirt behind Rocinante, exposing the limestone shelf beneath, we’re going to create a cool “hanging out together” grotto beneath the cantilevered foundation of the gym. On the wall of that gym – right behind Rocinante – is going to be a big, bronze plaque with the name of Jonathan Berman and a couple of dozen other names on it. Would you like your name, or perhaps the name of someone else who should forever be remembered, to appear on that indestructible plaque? You can make that happen for a donation of just $1,000 or more. Whittington is going to be ordering that plaque soon so that it can be ready when the gym in finished. (This is all going to happen VERY quickly, trust me.) You can donate online or notify daniel@wizardacademy.org by email. Arooo. – Indy

“

One of my great advantages is that I have very low expectations.

Most Stanford graduates have very high expectations, and you deserve to have high expectations because you came from a great school. You were very successful. You were top of your class. Obviously, you were able to pay for tuition. And then you’re graduating from one of the finest institutions on the planet. You’re surrounded by other kids that are just incredible.

People with very high expectations have very low resilience. And unfortunately, resilience matters in success.

I don’t know how to teach it to you except that I hope suffering happens to you.

True greatness in individuals comes from character, not intelligence, and character is shaped by experiences of adversity.

And so if I could wish upon you — I don’t know how to do it — but for all of you Stanford students, I’d wish upon you ample doses of pain and suffering.
