The Monday Morning Memo

Buccaneer’s
Wooden Angel

This 37-inch original wooden sculpture was carved by an unnamed sailor back in the days when pirates ruled the Caribbean.

A break in the wood – just below her eye – makes it appear as though she is weeping.

Pennie and I were at a poorly attended antique auction when this carving was sold for a fraction of its worth. But it was still more money than the Academy could spare. Thankfully, a famous pirate – Skunkmeat “Dave” Lofranco – was happy buy us this wonderful, weeping angel of the sea for the Chad Prosser room of Engelbrecht House.

A look at the cryptic engraving on the back of this angel makes you quietly realize it gets lonely on the ocean at night.

Might we call her The Angel of the Lonely Voyage?
