The Monday Morning Memo

Q: Why did Isaiah say, “In the year that King Uzziah died,” I saw the Lord?
A: King Uzziah was the prophet Isaiah’s friend, and friendly kings were rare for prophets in those days. Now his friend was dead. This brought instability into Isaiah’s life. God reveals himself as king to Isaiah in the year that Uzziah dies, because God is showing Isaiah that He is the one true king, no matter who sits on the throne. Isaiah served as God’s messenger during the reigns of four different kings.

Q: What does “the train of his robe filled the temple” mean?
A: The conquering king would have portions of the defeated king’s robe cut and sown into his own robe as a symbol and testimony of the conqueror’s strength and power. Isaiah looked at the train on God’s robe and there were so many conquests that his robe, “filled the temple,” symbolizing that he had defeated every enemy.
