“So much of every art is an expression of the subconscious that it seems to me that most of the important qualities [in the art] are put there unconsciously, and little of importance [is put there] by the conscious intellect.”
– Edward Hopper
He painted his last work in 1966 – “Two Comedians” – himself and Jo taking a final bow on a stage. He died the following year.*
“Two Comedians” was purchased from its third owner by Frank Sinatra in 1972. He sold it in 1995.
Sotheby’s auctioned the painting on November 16, 2018 for $12.5 million.
*Jo, who had been Edward’s steadfast partner for than 40 years, was in poor health herself. She died just 10 months later and was buried by his side. Before she died, however, Jo performed one last act of devotion to secure her husband’s legacy, bequeathing their entire collection of art, all of his unsold paintings, drawings, etchings, and documents, to the Whitney Museum, the institution that had been so instrumental in establishing his name in the early days.
