The Monday Morning Memo

Miguel de Cervantes,
the author of Don Quixote,
praises Alonso Picado, a Peruvian poet,
as being “an excellent poet.”
Here is the quote:

“Cuando esta luz nasció,
nasció con ella todo el valor,
nasció Alonso Picado; nasció mi hermano.”
–
La Galatea
book six

Picado, a resident of Arequipa,
was in need of over 1,500 pesos.

Dated October 6, 1600,
this is a contract between the Convento de San Pablo,
one of the earliest monasteries in Perú,
(now the Iglesia de San Pablo in Arequipa,)
and Alonso Picado who agreed to give his land
and hacienda as security for the loan.

This amazing document contains the names of the prominent clerics
of Arequipa in Perú in 1600. The people mentioned in the document are:

Fray Antonio Martinez – Prior of the convent

Fray Antonio de Rivera

Fray Domingo de Mendoça

Fray Lorenço de Sarauia

Fray Andrés Hordoñez

Fray Albarez Altamirano

Fray Juan de Sepedalegos

Alonso Picado
