I Did Not Make It Up.

“Gay” appears more than 100 times in Gertrude Stein’s
essay, Miss Furr and Miss Skeene, (a story based on
lesbian partners Maud Hunt Squire and Ethel Mars,)
widely recognized* as the first published use of
that word in reference to same-sex relationships.

“Toke” became part of subculture jargon
following the 1954 publication of 
The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook
which contained a recipe for
marijuana brownies.
