The final episode of “Mash” aired on February 28, 1983. With 106 million viewers, it still holds the record for a television finale. The final episodes of “Cheers” had 80 million, “Seinfeld” had 76 million, and “Friends” had 53 million viewers.

Alvan Earle Bovay organized a meeting in Ripon, Wisconsin of a small group of disaffected Democrats, Whigs, and Abolitionists.  They formed a new political party, choosing the name “Republicans.”  Six years later, their candidate Abraham Lincoln became the only third-party candidate to ever win the White House. The Republicans controlled the presidency during all but two terms out of the next fifty-two years.
