In the most recent issue of
Evolution and Human Behavior,
Dr. Leslie Seltzer of the University of Wisconsin
published a study in which it was discovered that
adult humans, upon hearing the voices of our mothers,
will register a drop in cortisol, which is generally linked to
stress, and a rise in oxytocin, which is linked to pleasure.
This does not happen, however, when we receive exactly the
same information from Mom in an Instant Message on our smartphones.
