Now I’m better, thanks.
During the filming of the pilot episode of The Andy Griffith Show
at Desilu Studios in 1960, Desi Arnaz mentioned that Andy’s fictional son, Jeremy, (played by Ron Howard,) brought “sunlight and innocence
and happy thoughts” into every scene he entered.
Producer Aaron Ruben agreed and immediately changed
the name of Jeremy’s character to “Opie,” a tongue-in-cheek nod
to “Magnum Opus,” the work that turns lead into gold.
