The Monday Morning Memo

Dr. Richard D. Grant once mentioned that packets of Sweet’n Low are used to train law enforcement officers to recognize one gram of white powder. This is why policemen jokingly refer to Sweet’n Low as “Diet Coke.”

See the guy in the blue shirt on the far right? That’s John Kaufeld, author of 27 books in the “Dummies” series. When Wizzo mentioned that bit about Sweet’n Low, John said, “I tried to snort Coke once, but it kept running out of my nose.”

One of his classmates instantly retorted, “I can see it on the shelf now: Coke for Dummies.”

And that, my friend, is how Wizard Academy classes get their nicknames. This was an awesome group. WGN Radio in Chicago, the Canadian Government and Elle magazine were represented. We even had Paul Boomer’s sister with us. Christi. She’s the third woman from the left.

A smart, smart group. Classes ran long every night because of their piercingly insightful questions. The Magical Worlds Communications Workshop. You really ought to come next time.

Random Quote:

“When advertising slogans are better known than the Ten Commandments or the Bill of Rights, when shopping malls are our places of worship, when bad behavior is justified as long as it leads to profit, when debt is justified as long as it leads to plasma TV, and when the measure of a person is the brand of car he drives, maybe it’s time to ask whether we’ve corrupted the very nature of capitalism. Believe it or not, capitalism originated as a system for the little guy. It replaced feudalism, in which a few wealthy owners had all the power and money and the common person had nothing. It was a noble ideal.”
