“A gift received with a string attached is not a gift, but a trap. It is bait on a hook and you are the fish.

A gift – a true gift – is an act of love. When you give a gift, let it disappear forever from your mind.

If you give someone a book, never mention that book again. Never ask them if they read it. Never ask them their opinion of it. Say these words out loud with a big smile as you hand them your gift: ‘I give you my word of honor that I will never ask you whether or not you read this book, and I will never scan your bookshelves to see whether you still have it.’

When you give a gift, make certain the recipient knows the gift now belongs to them and they can do with it whatever they want. They can sell it. They can give it to someone else. They can set it on fire. All of those are okay with you.
