Dear Roy and Pennie,
Tomorrow is James Michener’s birthday.
He worked hand-in-hand with his wife, Mari.
The two of you also work the same way.
Because of this, I feel that you will appreciate
this bronze, her hand on his.
I made her mold on September 27, 1994,
two days after she died. His were made
a few months later.
Their union was special. So is yours.
When I showed the finished work to Jim,
he asked what I was going to do with it.
I replied, “I don’t know.”
It only took 17 years of waiting
to find a couple who held many
of the same values.
