The Monday Morning Memo

The fire spread through Washoe Valley, hopping from tree to tree, jumping over highways and attacking homes, barns and businesses. The Holy Spirit Catholic Mission burned to the ground, leaving only a five-foot statue of the Virgin Mary in its wake.

The north wind headed the flames toward South Reno.

Six hundred firefighters, volunteers and first responders came to the rescue. Men and women, young and old, of all skin colors, Democrats and Republicans, gay and straight, wealthy and poor worked tirelessly both day and night to battle the raging fire. The good guys won.

During the battle, the brave firefighters worked side by side. Water canteens and food were shared. Supportive pats on the back, even hugs, were common. Men and women looked out for each other, and teams rushed in to save other teams in danger. Under the dark smoke, a beautiful thing was happening.

Why should it take a raging fire to bring out the love and goodness within each of us?

Let’s all do better each day.

– Don Kuhl

Don,

Well said!

Your thoughts and mine were running parallel last week.

What you didn’t say, though, was whether the fire made it
to your property, or how close it came to you.

Is everything intact at your place?

Educators assume the answer is education.
Capitalists believe it’s purely economics.
Diversitizers think it’s diversity.
Methinks the problem is more than one problem and a good deal more nuanced.
Simply putting an impoverished individual in college isn’t the answer … it’s more a reflection of the greater problem.
What if the answer is economic equity and every persons income was capped at $100,000 annually… that if you lived in a house over 2000 sq ft you paid a hefty luxury and climate impact tax.
The real thing is everyone likes to talk about what everyone else should do … but most of us don’t really want to have to pay a hefty price to make it reality.
I have an acquaintance who lives in Aspen and runs a non profit that promotes love and peace and yoga and equality … and you can join her and a few of her close friends in Tuscany for a 14 day mindfulness retreat where they will explore topics like how to save Mother Earth and infuse society with equality and harmony .., you got a spare $14,000 you are welcome to join … it’s open to EVERYONE!
