The Monday Morning Memo

I have 2 goals for the
first quarter of 2022:

GOAL ONE: I want to recruit some business owners to give my newest partners a chance to work their magic.

The senior Wizard of Ads partners lovingly refer to the partners I have added in recent years as, “the cubs.” I invited each of these cubs to become Wizard of Ads partners for precisely the same reasons I invited the senior partners 12 years, 15 years, and 20 years ago. Some of the cubs have been partners for only a couple of years. Other “cubs” have been partners for longer. What makes them “cubs” is that they still have capacity. They are willing to work their magic for small companies for only $5,000 up front and $1,000 a month for the first year. They believe, as I do, that you will happily give them a significant raise at the end of that year because your business will have grown significantly. Do the math. When your company is doing 10X its current volume, are you going to be happy to pay $10,000/mo to the people who are helping you do it?  [If you are REALLY, REALLY small, then that math won’t work. In those cases, we grow the company to an agreed-upon benchmark without any raises to our salary. Then we begin earning our annual raises by growing your company beyond that benchmark.] The first client with whom I made this deal was Woody Justice back in 1986. His total sales were only $350,000/year, so I grew him to $1,000,000/yr before I began getting my annual raises. When Woody passed away, we were doing more than $10,000,000/yr. together and he was paying me 10X my original salary.

As a bonus to business owners who hire a Wizard of Ads “cub” to help them grow their businesses, I’m going to host a special 2-day Orientation/Q&A session for them on the campus of Wizard Academy this summer. Random Quote:

“Consider a single piece glowing in your family’s stove. See it, children? That chunk of coal was once a green plant, a fern or reed that lived one million years ago, or maybe two million, or maybe one hundred million. Can you imagine one hundred million years? Every summer for the whole life of that plant, its leaves caught what light they could and transformed the sun’s energy into itself. Into bark, twigs, stems. Because plants eat light, in much the way we eat food. But then the plant died and fell, probably into water, and decayed into peat, and the peat was folded inside the earth for years upon years—eons in which something like a month or a decade or even your whole life was just a puff of air, a snap of two fingers. And eventually the peat dried and became like stone, and someone dug it up, and the coal man brought it to your house, and maybe you yourself carried it to the stove, and now that sunlight—sunlight one hundred million years old—is heating your home tonight.”
