“I am still determined to be cheerful and happy,
in whatever situation I may be; for I have also learned from experience
that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions,
and not upon our circumstances.”
– Martha Washington,
to her friend Mercy Otis Warren
I’m convinced it was Martha Washington
who bracketed the feminist speech of Marcela
in George’s copy of Don Quixote.
I have no evidence other than the fact that
George never wrote in his books and rarely read fiction.
Martha, on the other hand, is one of America’s Invisible Heroes.
