The Monday Morning Memo

I just stumbled on the coolest mural in Downtown Tulsa. It’s a huge portrait of hometown boy, Leon Russell. I don’t know if I ever told you this story or not, but Larry Hall, the producer and musical director of my Christmas album, worked with Leon on his last album. He wrote and produced all the orchestrations. I purchased two old albums of Leon’s and asked Larry if he could get Leon to sign them for me.  He did. I tucked them away.  Little did we know that Leon would die so soon.  Larry mentioned that he didn’t even think to get any thing signed by Leon for himself while he was working with him. So, he was completely surprised when I presented him with the signed Leon Russell album as a thank you during my album release party. That was probably one of my most favorite gifts I’ve ever given.

When the wizard was in high school in Broken Arrow, he and I used to drive past Leon Russell’s house near Woodward Park in Tulsa… Driving around with nothing to do: Good times.
