Monday Morning Memo

Life is funny. People are funny. In truth, this girl could be a
groundbreaking genius on her way to work to find a cure for cancer.
All the best people are quirky. A person without foibles, quirks and
shortcomings is usually boring, tepid and dull. Or even worse, a Ken doll.

– Indiana Beagle

Pierre de Beaumarchais
was speaking to a Ken doll
in Act V of The Marriage of Figaro:
“Because you are a great noble, you think you are a great genius! Nobility, a fortune, a rank, appointments to office: all this makes a man so proud! What did you do to earn all this? You took the trouble to get born – nothing more. Moreover, you’re really a pretty ordinary fellow. While as for me, lost in the crowd, I’ve had to use more knowledge, more brains, just to keep alive than your likes have to spend on governing Spain and the Empire for a century.”

Random Quote:

“The way we talk about data quality is misleading. We speak of ‘clean’ data as if there is one state where data is both accurate (and bias-free) and reusable. Clean is not the same thing as accurate, and accurate is not the same thing as actionable. Problems on any one of these vectors could impede an A.I. model’s development or interfere with the quality of its results. There are lots of reasons data coming into a model may be problematic. Some are obvious: The data is factually incorrect, corrupted, or in an unexpected format. Other problems are more nuanced: The data was captured in a particular context and is being reused inappropriately; the data is at the wrong level of granularity for the model’s purpose; or the data isn’t standardized, and the same facts are represented or described in different ways.”
