So in Hebrew, the word for ‘word’ and the word for ‘thing’ is the same word, ‘dabar.’ In Hebrew you cannot differentiate between a word and a thing, a noun. Which to me means, psycholinguistically, that for us, words are real. They are concrete. They can build up. They can tear down. They last. And when you consider your words in that context, you use them differently. You know that phrase ‘abracadabra’ that magicians use? That comes from the Talmud. It’s an Aramaic phrase, ‘abra kidabra’ which means, ‘I create as I speak.’ We create worlds as we speak. So in the Bible, think about it, the story of Creation: ‘And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.’ The world was created through speech with words. So that’s the first Hebrew thing that just amazes me; this idea of ‘words’ and ‘thing’ being the same.
