The Monday Morning Memo

This is a music video from the days before there were music videos.

Montego Bay was a big hit in 1970. The singer/songwriter Bobby Bloom died 4 years later at the age of 28. Some say he shot himself because he was depressed. Others say he was shot by a man who was never apprehended afters he ran into a room during a fight about a girl. The only fact everyone agrees upon is that he was killed by a bullet.

For the weird “Rest of the Story” ending to this tale, start the video and then read what’s at the very bottom of this page.  I’ll see you next week. – Indiana Beagle

Vernon’ll meet me when the BOAC* lands
Keys to the MG will be in his hands
Adjust to the driving and I’m on my way
It’s all on the right side in Montego Bay

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
Come sing me La
Come sing me Montego Bay
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

And Gillian will meet me like a brother would
I think I remember but it’s twice as good
Like how cool the rum is from his silver tray
I thirst to be thirsty in Montego Bay

Sing out;
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
Come sing me La
Come sing me Montego Bay
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

I’ll lay on a lilo till I’m lobster red
I still feel the motion here at home in bed
I tell you it’s hard for me to stay away
You ain’t been till you been high in Montego Bay

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
Come sing me La
Come sing me Montego Bay
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

*BOAC was short for British Overseas Airways Corporation, which later became British Airways.

Considering the odd circumstances of young Bobby’s death, the final line on the master recording is particularly poignant. In it, Bobby breaks into a spontaneous rendition of a line from a famous Rodgers and Hammerstein song in Oklahoma!  Listen to the ending of the master recording HERE. This magical, marvelous, mysterious ending was deleted from the single to avoid paying royalties to R & H.

Random Quote:

“Like a flight simulator, fiction projects us into intense simulations of problems that run parallel to those we face in reality. And like a flight simulator, the main virtue of fiction is that we have a rich experience and don’t die at the end.”
