The Monday Morning Memo

826 Valencia is a Pirate Supply Store named for its street location in the Mission District of San Francisco.

(Really, it's just a front for what's going on in back…a tutoring center for kids.)

The pirate store was created through necessity.
San Francisco city ordinances state that any businesses in that district must be retail or a restaurant, so the pirate supply store was developed to serve as the “retail” front for the student writing center.

The store sells pirate clothing, eyepatches, compasses, spyglasses, pirate dice, skull flags, and secret treasures.

The books of student writing published by 826 Valencia are I Might Get Somewhere, Waiting to Be Heard, Talking Back, and their newest book, Home Wasn't Built in a Day, which includes a foreword by Robin Williams.

More than 1,400 volunteers—including published authors, magazine founders, SAT-course instructors, and documentary filmmakers—have donated their time to work with thousands of students at 826 Valencia. The services provided at 826 Valencia are free. – Wikipedia

Wizard Academy salutes 826 Valencia.

Random Quote:

“Ten minutes after, the sunlight spread at a gallop along the hillside, scattering shadows and sparkles, and the day had come completely. I hastened to prepare my pack, and tackle the steep ascent that lay before me; but I had something on my mind. It was only a fancy; but a fancy will sometimes be importunate. I had been most hospitably received and punctually served in my green caravanserai. The room was airy, the water excellent, and the dawn had called me to a moment. I say nothing of the tapestries or the inimitable ceiling, nor yet of the view which I commanded from the windows; but I felt I was in someone’s debt for all this liberal entertainment. And so it pleased me, in a half-laughing way, to leave pieces of money on the turf as I went along, until I had left enough for my night’s lodging. I trust they did not fall to some rich and churlish drover.”
