The Monday Morning Memo

When Covid first hit America and advertisers everywhere were cancelling their ads, Robert and Lori Ramsey stayed on the air. Their ads were short memories of hard times in the past, with an encouraging word for the future. Here are three of those ads, followed by a 60-second ad in the same style.

#1 ROBERT: During Hurricane Betsy in ‘65, my Dad moved us into his jewelry design studio.
LORI:  The third floor of a brick building downtown is where he felt his family would be safe.
ROBERT:  Dad always wanted us to be safe.
LORI:   And we want YOU to be safe, too.|
ROY:  Here today, here tomorrow.  Rrrrramsey’s Diamond Jewelers.

#2. LORI:  My first job at Ramsey’s was to “clean the bathroom and sweep the floor.”
ROBERT:  Our Dad believed it was important to give our customers a clean, safe environment.
LORI:   My brother and I believe that, too.
ROBERT:  Be healthy. Be happy.
LORI:  Love has NOT been cancelled.
ROY:  Rrrrramsey’s Diamond Jewelers.

#3 ROBERT:  Three weeks after Katrina, I met a man who no longer had a house, and he no longer had a job,
LORI:  but what made him sad was that he hadn’t seen his wife smile for 3 weeks.
ROBERT:  When people talk about true love, I think of THAT guy.
ROY:  Here today, here tomorrow.  Rrrrramsey’s Diamond Jewelers.

ROBERT: Everywhere I went, I felt like I was walking on air.
LORI: I had the same experience.
ROBERT: Volunteers were everywhere you looked.LORI:  At the airports and hotels.
ROBERT:
Giving directions and answering questions.
LORI:  At hospitality booths
ROBERT: in every event.
LORI: I remember watching our father do that when we were kids.
ROBERT: Bob Ramsey was New Orleans PROUD.
LORI: When he saw a visitor eating alone, he’d often ask them to join
           our table.
ROBERT:  That wasn’t just our Dad. This whole city is like that.
LORI: We had visitors staying with us from Maryland,
ROBERT: wearing their team jerseys, of course,
LORI: and they were blown away by the people of New Orleans.
ROBERT: Bob Schieffer from CBS was blown away, too.
LORI: He said, “People ask me who I’m cheering for today, and my
answer is the people of New Orleans.”
ROBERT:  The food is great.
LORI: The architecture is wonderful.
ROBERT:  But the people…
LORI: the people…
ROBERT: are magnificent.
LORI:
New Orleans, we love you.
ROBERT:  [Softly, reflecting] We love you, New Orleans.

Random Quote:

“The Arctic expedition was a remarkable success, I’m all but certain there’s a Nobel prize in my future. Actually, I shouldn’t say that. I’m entirely certain… (laughter) No, Mother, I could not feel your church group praying for my safety… (laughter) The fact that I’m home safe does not prove that it worked. That logic is Post Hoc ergo Propter Hoc… (laughter) No, I’m not sassing you in Eskimo talk.”
