The Monday Morning Memo

Roving reporter Rotbart’s book, September Twelfth, is now available. Did you realize the 20th anniversary of 9/11 is this week?

Although this book is centered on The Wall Street Journal and reads as an American comeback story, it is ripe with insights for small business owners and managers, hidden in plain sight.

Core lessons for leaders include:
  1. Set a clear vision of your mission and expectations.
  2. Hire and train employees who will embrace that mission.
  3. Get out of their way and let them work, more or less, unsupervised.
  4. Praise publicly and criticize as infrequently as possible in private.
  5. Allow employees to take risks. When they don’t pan out, don’t make a big deal of it. Move on.

Random Quote:

“As I went through my stack of Christmas cards for a second peek, one stood out.

It really wasn’t a holiday card at all. On the front was a beautiful beach scene at sunset, with no mention of this jolly time of year. Inside, there was no inscribed message wishing me a joyous holiday and a fabulous New Year.

Instead, at the bottom of the card was a lone signature I could not read. It started with a big capital L or J or F, followed by a little curvy line. Even Dick Tracy couldn’t figure out a person’s name from this bold blue scribble.

By chance, I glanced at the back of the card for the first time.

In the same blue ink was one line of writing. I think it reads, “Remember the dunes. A great time.”

Of course, I had thrown away the envelope days ago. Darn it.

So if you sent me this card, thank you.

And don’t do it again. It keeps me up at night.”
