What Makes this Illustration Exceptional…

Jay Mistry drew this illustration of the Kansas City skyline for the cover of a baronial greeting card that will be sent to each of the businesses in Kansas City that were selected to be part of RomanticSpotsKansasCity.com

  1. The most iconic emblem in Kansas City is this statue at the edge of town.
  2. Notice how Jay put you behind the statue, so that you see what it is seeing.
  3. Notice how the ground around the statue is outlined, but not colorized. This gives you a distinct foreground which helps to establish depth-of-field, but without distracting you from the native American, which is the focal point and soul of the image.
  4. Notice how the buildings are detailed outlines, without any additional details that might distract from the statue.
  5. Likewise, the buildings are colorized – not individually – but in groups. Again, this gives depth and distinction to the illustration without drawing our eye away from the native American on the horse.
  6. Jay chose this elegant and tasteful way to give a nod to the Kansas City Chiefs football team without making the football stadium the heart and soul of the city.
  7. AI might replace the hand of the artist and the camera of the photographer but it will not soon capture the judgment, taste, discretion, and originality that shimmer and shine in the souls of every artist, illustrator, and photographer.

The RomanticSpots websites had a collective total of 595,000 Facebook followers in Texas as of last Friday, and that number will surely exceed 600,000 next week. The four-person team of Clarissa, Lalo, Jacob and Jay design, build, research and maintain these websites as a gift to couples who are looking for something new and fun to do.

Texas is now completed with Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, Waco, Fredericksburg, Galveston, and Beavers Bend each having their own robust and interactive RomanticSpots websites.

Random Quote:

“No matter what brings someone into a poetry workshop class, any kind of writing that they do thereafter is going to be improved by the discipline in poetry and the price that poetry exacts from the poet and the increase in his word-sense and his intuition for verbally-dramatic situations and the rest of the things that poetry brings to the highest point. In other words, if anyone has a background in poetry, if he takes it seriously enough, if he takes the writing of poetry seriously enough, then any other form of writing is comparatively easy.”

- James Dickey, in an interview with Don Swaim in 1987
