This original oil was in collection of Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, Germany. It is painted in the manner of Gerrit Dou (Dutch, 1613-1675.)
Notice the textures of the cloth, the subtle use of dramatic lighting and the shadows created by it. But mostly, notice the extensions that pierce the artificial framelines created by the deep window: the paper projecting forward, the sleeve hanging downward, the drapery extending from the inner window frame to hang beyond the outer frame, the amazing beagle on the bench.
This painting will be auctioned on Feb. 29, 2012. Wizzo thinks it will bring more than its pre-auction estimate of $2,000 to $4,000.
