The Monday Morning Memo

When America gets mad at the French we rename french fries “Freedom Fries.”  We've done it twice during my lifetime and neither time did it ever catch on.

But it did make us look petty and small.

Last week the Willis Insurance Group leased 140,000 square feet in Chicago's landmark Sears Tower and proudly announced that part of their lease agreement was that the tower would now be known as Willis Tower.

Sure thing, Willis.

Corporate ego never ceases to amaze me.

End of side tunnel.

Random Quote:

“Trump’s former adviser and chief strategist Steve Bannon, Turchin said, is a ‘paradigmatic example’ of a counter-elite. He grew up working-class, went to Harvard Business School, and got rich as an investment banker and by owning a small stake in the syndication rights to Seinfeld. None of that translated to political power until he allied himself with the common people. ‘He was a counter-elite who used Trump to break through, to put the white working males back in charge.'”

- Graeme Wood, quoting Peter Turchin in the Dec 2020 edition of The Atlantic
