The Monday Morning Memo

He’s Our Brand of Crazy

Shane Speal is spending his life in celebration of the cigar box guitar. He makes them, plays them, encourages other pople to do the same, and has now gone so far as to build a no-budget blues joint in his little town of New Alexandria (Population: 595) in rural Pennsylvania. Wizzo and me have – from a distance – watched Shane struggle and hope and never give up for the past several years. See Shane play The Star Spangled Banner on just one string in the video below and you’ll see a very good kind of crazy at work.
His finger slide is a 3/4-inch socket from his tool box. Amazing stuff.

Click the Speal’s Tavern image below to take a look at what Shane is doing.

“I like Don Quixote because he,
like me, is completely ridiculous.
There is no quality about him
that would indicate success.
I identify with that.
He has nothing to offer save for this:
he is completely and utterly committed.”
– Roy H. Williams
