The Need for Narrative

Watching the news, you see it everywhere: the human compulsion to analyze, explain, justify, deny … we struggle to accept that much of life is sheer happenstance. Our minds insist on shaping random events into stories — not just to record them, but to interpret them, and to fold them neatly into our own personal mythologies.

Take President Trump. For many supporters, it’s unthinkable that he’s just a deeply flawed man in an extraordinary position of power. In their Tribal schema, he plays the Alpha role, so the narratives must bend to protect that image.

But it isn’t just politics. All of us lean on stories that soothe the soul, rationalize the “why,” point to a villain, and give chaos a sense of order. Reality, by contrast, is often messy — complex, contradictory and sometimes inexplicable.

So we turn to Narrative. Not because it’s factually true or accurate: but because it helps the world make sense … even if the narrative itself  is nonsense.
