According to a story written by Pliny the Elder in the first century, Cleopatra hosted a lavish banquet for Mark Antony of Rome. 

When Antony commented about the opulence of that dinner, Cleopatra dissolved a priceless pearl in a glass of wine and then drank it to show that she didn’t care about money. (Yes, pearls will very slowly dissolve in sour wine.)
