“If you added up every single Starbucks in America and every single McDonald’s in America, it wouldn’t come close to the number of museums there are in America. And if you added up the attendance of every single Major League sporting event and combine that with every single amusement park visit, it wouldn’t get near the number of Americans who get up and go out to visit museums and aquariums and planetariums and science centers and historic sites. There is a sentiment going around that Americans are idiots, that all we care about is beer and sex and cheap thrills. And every time you watch a screen, doesn’t it feel like they’re putting some American dimwit on there, and little-by-little making us all feel like that’s who we really are?

That’s not who we really are. The truth is Americans are crazy about art and architecture and history and zoology and anthropology and science just like everybody else. And it makes my blood boil the way we get fed this mouth breathing image of ourselves. We’re better than that. And I’m not saying that as an encouragement. I’m stating a fact we are better than that. Please feel free to share. By the way, did you know that the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum is powered by solar energy? Yep. Since 2017.”
