The Monday Morning Memo

The Outsiders
was a breakout movie for
Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze,
Emilio Estevez and a bunch of other young talent.

The Outsiders takes place in 1961
in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Wizzo grew up.

Ten years later, Wizzo was roughly
the age of the younger boys in that movie.
Same town. Same problems.

He says the only difference
between the Tulsa of 1971
and the Tulsa of 1961 is that
they wore bell bottoms in ’71
instead of rolling up the cuffs
on straight-leg Levi’s.

Wizzo says he knows some of the guys
Susie Hinton used as characters in her novel,
The Outsiders.
One of them still lives a couple of miles from
the Admiral Twin Drive-In.

“For a moment he was completely befuddled, but this is a condition which can never exist for long in a mind like Khaavren's, a mind which acts like a fallow field, in which it is only necessary for a seed to touch it before this seed will sprout, although with what fruit is not always apparent.”
