The Monday Morning Memo

A Lesson to the Cognoscenti About Spin

Science fiction has taught us that aliens are dangerous infiltrators intent on destroying our way of life.

An action or an object that is illegal is at once immoral, unethical and evil.

Combine these words and you trigger in the mind a powerfully negative reaction to “illegal aliens.”

Republican strategists today believe a Presidential candidate cannot win without receiving at least 35 percent of the Hispanic vote.  George W. Bush accomplished this in 2000 and 2004. John McCain failed to do so in 2008.

Might a wise candidate address this issue with the phase “undocumented immigrants,” rather than “illegal aliens?”

When Ronald Reagan ran for reelection in 1984, he proclaimed, “I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and lived here, even though some time back they may have entered illegally.”

There are currently eleven million people living in the U.S. who came here without permission. You are now the King. What do you decree we do with them?

Just wonderin’.
