Monday Morning Memo

  • Robert Alan Black, Ph.D., CSP
  • Athens, GA

“SOLITUDE is out of fashion. Our companies, our schools and our culture are in thrall to an idea I call the New Groupthink, which holds that creativity and achievement come from an oddly gregarious place.”

My 16 years experience as a license architect and interior designer and my 28 years experience as a creative workplace consultant contradicts your opening statement.

Not all people work well in teams.

Typically Americans are not team people except in panic or emergency situations, mostly life/death situations.

How often have you done team or group activies at work, after work, with friends, with your family?

The push for TEAM work started in the 1980s after massive downsizing, right-sizing, correct-sizing that was caused by the economy and decisions by CEOs and top management to save money. Then they realized that the only way work can be accomplished is through “THE WHOLE IS GREATER THAN THE SUM OF THE PARTS” misused idea.

You need to do much more reading than one or two studies before writing articles in your newspaper.

Random Quote:

“A petition was presented to King James I on January 16, 1604 asking ‘that there might bee a newe translation of the Bible, because, those which were allowed in the raigns of Henrie the eight, and Edward the sixt, were corrupt and not aunswerable to the truth of the Originall.’ Newly-crowned and anxious to enhance his profile as scholar-king, James set in motion the seven-years’ labor of forty-seven biblical scholars which resulted in the King James Bible.”
