The Monday Morning Memo

Francis “Frank” Zappa
was an iconic musician, composer, singer and songwriter whose work was characterized by nonconformity, free-form improvisation,  musical virtuosity and the comedic satire of American culture. His kids are Dweezil, Moon Unit, Diva Muffin, and Ahmet Emuukha.

The wizard and I agree that this song by Francis is Zappa at his quirky best. Don’t bail out when you get to the extended guitar solo in the middle of the song (1:56 to 3:22) Francis kicks this motorbike into a whole new gear after that solo. – Indy B.

These 1969 posters of Francis are now selling for about $150 each. I remember seeing them when I was prepubescent. Fifty-three years ago, they are considered scandalous.

This poster is a perfect example of “the comedic satire of American culture” that was the trademark of the Zapmaster. Nobody called him that, by the way. I just made it up. – Indy

PS – In the photo at the top, the little girl is Moon Unit and the little boy is Dweezil. True Fact: When the second son of Princess Pennie and the wizard was born, the wizard very much wanted to give the middle name “Zadok” but Pennie wouldn’t go for it. (sigh)

“I walked up the Damrak in a state of high anticipation. Amsterdam had been Katz’s and my favorite European city by a factor too high to compute. It was beautiful, it was friendly, it had excellent bars and legal dope. If we had lingered another week, I could well be there yet, sitting on the station plaza with an acoustic guitar and some children named Sunbeam and Zippity Doo Dah. It was that close.”
– Bill Bryson, Neither Here Nor There, Travels in Europe, p. 82

“I think the golden rule for men should be: If you’re a man, don’t say anything to a woman on the street that you wouldn’t want a man saying to you in prison.”
