The Monday Morning Memo

May 30, 2012

Re: Fame and Fortune Want ’em?

Roy … This past Memorial Day I was sitting in my living room with my brother. We were talking about the flawed idea that success has something to do with  … FAME & FORTUNE.  We growled and groused about CEO’s that aren’t about building anything other than bank accounts the size of their ego … that Wall Street elites are using their Ivy league educations to hedge bets likes Las Vegas bookies … that dreamers get squeezed out of the game by bean counters and bureaucrats.

The arc of the conversation was that Americans have been sold a bill of goods that the good life has to do with … GOODS. That we dismiss the man who is a good husband, good father, fosters good relationships, is good at what he does for a living (regardless of his job) and lives a whole complete and “good” life. That our children believe that HAPPY will just show up at their doorstep someday in the future with a guy carrying a giant check that spells HAPPILY EVER AFTER instead of teaching them happiness, soul deep happiness, is the byproduct of good actions and good choices we make every day. It’s an investment in life … not a lotto ticket.

Then I open up Monday Morning Memo.

*** I wonder if this a “vibe” that is beginning to find some traction at this point in the pendulum swing … that people are tired of the loud noisy drum thumping narcissistic voices ranting & chanting … and have a hunger for quiet words that speak to deeper truths? ***

“My Advice if You’re a Leader

Leadership = Energy + Direction

Direction = Vision + Courage

Therefore, Leaders are people of Energy, Vision, and Courage

If you are a person of energy, vision, and courage:

(1.) Resist the temptation to become a thought leader. Oh, I forgot. The new word is influencer. Don’t become one. I have noticed that people like you often become surrounded by wanderers who are looking for a leader. It is hard to make money when you are stumbling over puppies who gather at your feet.

(2.) Do not become a zookeeper. If you are surrounded by persons of energy, vision, and courage like yourself, do not try to “manage” those wild creatures. Zookeepers diminish energy, dull vision, and punish courage. You will never meet a wealthy zookeeper.

(3.) Are you ready to be wealthy? When you see pent-up energy, unexplored vision, and fearless courage, become the friend who delivers these people from their captivity. Hire them. Unlock their leg irons. Empower them, encourage them, unleash them.

(4.)  Model correct behavior. Lead by example. This is a leader shares vision and direction with other leaders.

(5.) Your life is about to become very exciting.”
